On the fence

Choices are not always easy to make. Sometimes you have to be in the middle or back out all together. One time, while with my friends walking around, we found a few of our other friends also just walking around. one of them pulls out a box of cigarettes and asks us if we wanted any. We were all awestruck that someone our age would be able to buy cigarettes. I asked him how he bought them and he said that he had stolen them from his parents. A few kids did take some of them and lit them, trying to act cool. Of course none of them knew how to smoke so the other kid showed them how to do it. After a while, a few friends and I got fed up with the smoke and decided to leave. Once we were about to leave, a police car drove by. He came over to us and asked us if we were smoking (obviously, some of the kids were). I, along with a few of my friends, replied no. Even some of the smokers said no. But, the kids that had been smoking had the smell of smoke on them and were brought to the police station where their parents had to pick them up. It's not always easy to chose not to do the cool thing, but in the end, it may save you from an embarrasing ride back to the police station.

Terrorists

Because someone is a terrorist, that does not constitute the act of torture. No matter who some one is they have rights. If someone kills a large number of people, they have their own rights. Just because they are a terrorist, that doesn't mean that they are worthless. They should have just as many rights as the average american. Everyone in this country, whether free or detained, has rights. Committing torture is a crime. Those who commit crimes are and should be punished. With the intent to hurt someone comes another crime. If they conspire to do a crime, that is another crime unto itself.

Literally???

To be literal is to actually mean what you say. When being literal, you mean that you want them to do exactly what you say. So if someone says, "Jump off a bridge.... literally!" they mean to actually jump off of a bridge. I use literal language all of the time. I even say the word "literally" in sentences. Saying things literally is fun to do because although you mean what you say, it doesn't sound like it

The Overcrowded Lifeboat

In 1842, a ship struck an iceberg and more than 30 survivors were crowded into a lifeboat intended to hold 7. As a storm threatened, it became obvious that the lifeboat would have to be lightened if anyone were to survive. The captain reasoned that the right thing to do in this situation was to force some individuals to go over the side and drown. Such an action, he reasoned, was not unjust to those thrown overboard, for they would have drowned anyway. If he did nothing, however, he would be responsible for the deaths of those whom he could have saved. Some people opposed the captain's decision. They claimed that if nothing were done and everyone died as a result, no one would be responsible for these deaths. On the other hand, if the captain attempted to save some, he could do so only by killing others and their deaths would be his responsibility; this would be worse than doing nothing and letting all die. The captain rejected this reasoning. Since the only possibility for rescue required great efforts of rowing, the captain decided that the weakest would have to be sacrificed. In this situation it would be absurd, he thought, to decide by drawing lots who should be thrown overboard. As it turned out, after days of hard rowing, the survivors were rescued and the captain was tried for his action. If you had been on the jury, how would you have decided?

Personally, I think he made the wrong decision. He should be guilty. He could have saved all the people on the rowboat If he had let all 30 people stay on the boat, they could have had a chance to survive. They could have even had switching people go in and out of the boat. He made the wrong decision and he definitely could have saved more people. If he had only thought out more, or if he had gotten off the boat himself, he would have made a better decision. If it had been him going off the boat, he probably would have rethought the dilemma.
