Cal Ripken Jr. Interview
The Only Way I Know
Cal Ripken, Jr.
1. Mr. Ripken, just a little background, where did you grow up?
I grew up in Aberdeen, Maryland. A little town outside of Baltimore. I went to Aberdeen High School. I moved around a lot because my father was a Minor League manager so we moved where he moved.
2. How did you feel with your father as a manager?
It wasn’t like having your father as a Little League coach, it is as if your friends father was your coach. I didn’t address him as “Dad”, I mainly called him “Senior” or simply #43.
3. How did you feel when he was fired?
Again, it was a change. I was kind of surprised. He was fired only 6 games into the season. There were rumors that he would fired during the offseason.
4. Overall did you enjoy your playing time in the MLB?
Absolutely. It was very exciting. I had so much fun. Baseball was my life and still is.
5. How did it feel to play for the Orioles your entire career?
It was an experience. It would be interesting if I had not played just for the Orioles.
6. In 1983 when the Orioles won the World Series, what did that feel like?
It was amazing. We felt like we were on top of the world! Afterwords we went on a post-season tour of Japan. That was also very exciting.
7. How did it feel to have your consecutive innings played record stopped at 8,243 innings?
I was upset in a way but I knew it had to be done. I believe it served as a distraction to the team.
8. How did you feel when you broke the record for consecutive games played?
It was amazing. I thought “Wow! I played more games than Lou Gehrig. In total I played over 2,632 games consecutively. 3,001 for the Orioles in total.
9. How did you stay in peak performance your whole life?
I had a rigorous routine of going to the ballpark early and training longer than most of my teammates.
10. Would you ever consider coming out of retirement?
Maybe! (insert laugh) I think I am getting a bit old though.
